BMW Enabler tool for Gateway

Overview

To operate the Gateway 500S, Gateway 500S BT, or Gateway 500 product, certain options have to be enabled in the car audio system, which might not be set by default in all BMW vehicles. Enabling these protocols normally requires a car diagnostics tool (e.g. Autologic) and the expertise of a BMW specialized workshop.

The GEN tool (GEN2BME) provides these specific enabling/disabling diagnostics functions only through the ODB 2 interface, thus making it a small and affordable device to help the installation/removal of the Gateway product.

Features

  • Enables Gateway 500S, Gateway 500S BT, or Gateway 500 functions without an expensive professional diagnostic tool
  • Works with the vast majority of MOST™ system BMW vehicles through the ODB 2 interface

How it works

To operate the Gateway product properly certain protocols have to be enabled in the car audio system, which might not be set by default in all BMW vehicles. Enabling these protocols normally requires a car diagnostics tool (e.g. Autologic) and the expertise of a BMW specialised workshop. The GEN tool provides these specific enabling/disabling diagnostics functions only, thus making it a small and affordable device to help the installation/removal of the Gateway product.

The GEN tool is shipped in a ready-to-enable state, which means that when the GEN tool is plugged into a vehicle with a Gateway installed properly it performs the enabling process.

Once the GEN tool is used in a vehicle with a Gateway, the procedure changes its status to ready-to disable. This means that when the GEN tool is plugged into the same vehicle with the Gateway in bypass mode or if the Gateway is removed, the GEN tool will perform the disabling process and it will return to the ready-to enable state.

If the Gateway has been removed without disabling the options in the vehicle, the associated GEN tool in ready-to-disable mode can still be used to disable the options and doing so it will also change to ready-to-enable status.

Installation

We strongly recommend to have your device installed by a qualified car electronics technician.
Despite all efforts and several tests Dension and its authorised distributors and retailers cannot guarantee that by using the GEN tool there is no need for a professional diagnostics tool to enable the features on certain vehicles. The GEN tool can replace the enabling functions of a professional diagnostics tool in many cases, but it does not replace the skills of a professional installer. Dension does not warrant any installation work or assume liability for any damage caused due to negligence, improper installation or operation.

The Enabler tool works only if the Gateway has been installed in the car previously. The Gateway 500S, Gateway 500S BT, or Gateway 500 has to be in Gateway mode. Turn ON the ignition and connect the GEN tool to the OBD 2 diagnostic connector. The enabling procedure starts automatically and takes approximately 20-30 seconds. During the process the status signal LED on the GEN tool is flashing green/red. Once the procedure finishes successfully the LED will show a steady green signal. If the process is successful the audio system will restart. Do not remove the GEN tool before the audio system restarts.
